6000! That’s the number of associates in the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR). This division is the innovation engine of Novartis, focusing on powerful new technologies that have the potential to help produce therapeutic breakthroughs for patients.

The department of Immunology (IMM) within NIBR is discovering innovative and transformative therapies to improve the lives of patients suffering from autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

We have an immediate opening for an internship in our Immune Regulation group within IMM. In this position, you will actively contribute to ongoing drug discovery projects as well as exploratory and target identification activities in the areas of innate immune function and associated autoimmune disease. You should have hands-on experience in cell culture and biochemical assays as well as the practical know-how to genetically manipulate mammalian cells to mechanistically interrogate immune signaling pathways. Ideally, you should have also gained some practical experience in bioinformatic data analysis.

Earliest starting date: April 2023
Duration: 6 months

Your responsibilities:

  • Design, perform and evaluate experiments to characterize novel drug candidates in various in vitro and ex vivo assays (e.g., cellular and biochemical assays, gene editing, qPCR, western blotting, FACS)
  • Work collaboratively as an integral part of cross-functional project teams, provide organized experiment record tracking and data analysis and be an active member of lab and project teams
  • Independently search for information in scientific and technical literature, establish new technologies in the lab and present your data within the team

Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion:

Novartis is committed to building an outstanding, inclusive work environment and diverse teams representative of the patients and communities we serve.

Minimum requirements

What you’ll bring to the role:
  • BSc or MSc degree in Biology or a related scientific discipline
  • Working proficiency in English
  • Experience in mammalian cell culture and isolation of primary cells
  • Good working knowledge of a range of biochemical/molecular biology techniques (e.g., gene editing, immunoassays, western blot, qPCR)
  • Experience in DNA, RNA, and protein delivery methods (lipofection, electroporation, viral transduction), experience with bioinformatic data analysis using R or Python is a plus
  • Passionate about adapting and utilizing new technologies and techniques
  • Strong interest in working in a creative environment where you demonstrate pro-activeness, a flexible attitude, collaborative spirit, scientific curiosity, and ownership of your projects
